Ready for change?
If you’ve been dealing with anxiety for a while, you’ve probably tried a lot of things already. Coping tips from Instagram. Breathing exercises. Journaling. Maybe therapy that helped you understand your anxiety without actually calming it down. So when someone mentions hypnotherapy for anxiety, it’s fair to wonder what makes it any different, and whether it actually works or just sounds nice.
Here’s the short answer: hypnotherapy works with the part of your mind that’s actually creating the anxious response in the first place, instead of just helping you manage it after it shows up.
Why anxiety doesn't respond to logic alone
Most anxiety isn’t a rational response to what’s happening right now. It’s a pattern, often one your subconscious learned a long time ago as a way to protect you. Maybe it kept you alert during a genuinely hard time. Maybe it helped you avoid something painful, or brace for something unpredictable. At the time, that response served a purpose.
The problem is your subconscious doesn’t automatically update itself once the danger has passed. It keeps running the same protective pattern years later, even in situations that have nothing to do with where the pattern came from. That’s why you can know, logically, that you’re safe, and still feel your chest tighten or your mind race anyway. Your conscious mind understands the facts. Your subconscious is still reacting to something older.
This is also why willpower alone rarely fixes anxiety for good. You can talk yourself down in the moment, breathe through it, distract yourself, and none of that touches the pattern underneath. Many people describe this as feeling like they’re managing their anxiety instead of actually getting past it, and that’s an accurate description of what’s happening. Coping tools work on the conscious mind. The pattern lives in the subconscious.
What's actually happening in a hypnotherapy session

Hypnotherapy uses a state of deep focus and relaxation to reach the subconscious directly. This isn’t unconsciousness, and it’s not the loss of control you see in movies. You stay aware the entire time. It’s closer to the calm, focused feeling right before you fall asleep, or the way your mind drifts during a long drive, when it becomes more open and less defended than it is during a normal waking state.
In that state, the subconscious becomes easier to work with directly. Instead of talking about the anxiety from the outside, the way traditional talk therapy often does, hypnotherapy allows us to go to where the pattern actually started and help your mind release it at the source. That’s the core difference. It’s not about learning to manage anxiety better. It’s about addressing why the pattern exists in the first place.
Is this just relaxation, or is something real happening?
This is one of the most common questions we get, and it’s a fair one. Relaxation is part of the process, but it’s not the mechanism of change. Plenty of things are relaxing, a massage, a nap, without shifting a deep rooted pattern. What makes hypnotherapy different is that the relaxed state creates access. Your subconscious becomes more receptive while you’re in it, which is what allows old patterns to actually be addressed and released rather than just soothed for an hour.
You also aren’t handing over control. You can’t be made to do or say anything against your will, and you can bring yourself out of the state whenever you choose. Most clients are surprised by how present and clear headed they feel throughout.
Where the body and spirit come in
Anxiety isn’t only a mental pattern. It often lives in the body too, in muscle tension, a racing heart, shallow breathing, or a nervous system that’s stuck in a heightened state even when nothing is actively wrong. This is part of why hypnotherapy alone isn’t always the full picture, and why we don’t treat it as one.
I used to think anxiety was purely a mental thing. Then I learned better, and that shift changed how Heal Yourself Therapy approaches healing. The two main modalities we use with clients who want to eliminate anxiety are hypnotherapy and our proprietary Neuro Somatic Reconditioning Technique (NRT). NRT works with the body directly to help release anxiety that’s stored physically rather than only mentally. Clients often notice this shows up as less reactivity day to day, fewer moments where a small trigger sends them into a full spike of anxiety, since the nervous system itself is calmer and less primed to overreact.
Depending on what you need, we may also bring in Reiki or Body Code, which focus on healing energetic imbalances. The combination matters, because anxiety is rarely rooted in just one place. That’s why we focus on the connection between mind, body, and spirit, rather than treating anxiety as a purely mental problem to think your way out of.
What a typical path looks like
Every person’s anxiety has a different root, so no two clients follow exactly the same path. That said, here’s a general shape of what to expect.
Your first session starts with a conversation focused on pinpointing the source of the anxiety you’re experiencing. We talk through what your anxiety looks like day to day, when it tends to show up, and what you’ve already tried. This helps identify where the pattern likely started, even if you don’t consciously remember the original moment.
From there, sessions combine hypnotherapy with Neuro Somatic Reconditioning Technique. Many clients start to notice a shift within the first few sessions, though this varies depending on how long the pattern has been in place and how many layers there are to work through. Some anxiety is tied to one clear root. Some has built up over years and takes a little more time to fully release.

What does hypnotherapy for anxiety cost?
Your first hypnotherapy session starts at $250, with follow up sessions priced at $200. Many clients choose to add our Neuro Somatic Reconditioning Technique to an in person session, which is available as a $50 add on and pairs naturally with the anxiety work you’re already doing.
Most clients find that combining hypnotherapy with a body based technique like NRT gets to the root of the anxiety faster than hypnotherapy alone. During your first conversation, we’ll talk through what makes sense for your specific situation so you know what to expect before committing to anything.
Frequently asked questions
Can hypnotherapy help with panic attacks, or just general anxiety? Both. Panic attacks are often an intensified version of the same underlying pattern, so the same root level approach applies, though we may move at a different pace depending on severity.
Do I need to believe in hypnosis/hypnotherapy for it to work? No. Skepticism doesn’t block the process. What matters is your willingness to relax and participate, not whether you’re a believer going in. I always tell people, you don’t have to believe in it, you just have to want it to work.
How is this different from therapy I’ve already tried? Traditional talk therapy often works with the conscious mind, helping you understand and reframe your anxiety. Hypnotherapy works with the subconscious directly, which is where the pattern actually lives.
Will I remember the session? Yes. You’re aware and present throughout, and most clients remember the session clearly afterward. We also record each session for you, so you can reinforce the work at home until your next visit.
How many sessions will I need to get rid of anxiety? In general, it’s a good idea to plan for 4 to 5 sessions. It takes some reconditioning to retrain the mind. That said, many people start to notice a difference even after their first session.
Is hypnotherapy safe? Yes. You’re in control the entire time, and the process is guided, not forced. Nothing happens without your participation and awareness.
What if I’ve never been hypnotized before and I’m nervous? That’s completely normal, and most first time clients feel some version of that. We walk you through exactly what to expect before we begin, so there are no surprises once the session starts.
Do online hypnotherapy sessions work just as well as in-person hypnotherapy sessions?
Yes. Many clients find virtual sessions to be just as effective and meaningful as in-office sessions. Hypnotherapy does not require you and your practitioner to be in the same physical room, and the same is true for the body based work we may incorporate alongside it.
As long as you have a quiet, private space where you can relax and participate without interruption, we can guide you through the full process in real time.
Can I do NRT online?
Yes. NRT can be done virtually. For online sessions, you’ll need a hook shaped massager that can comfortably reach along your spine and that is fully charged before your appointment.
The process is guided by us from beginning to end. In the first phase, we work with the patterns, emotions and reactions you want to reduce while you use the massager as directed. After the hypnotherapy portion of the session, we move into the second phase, which focuses on reinforcing the positive thoughts, feelings and responses you want to strengthen while supporting change at the nervous system level.
You handle the physical part yourself while your practitioner walks you through each step in real time, making the process easy to follow from home.
